We have counted three Nobel Prize winners, 12 fellows of the Royal Society, six fellows of the British Academy and a winner of the prestigious Crafoord Prize among our faculty.
Within our academic community, we have strong and distinctive strengths across the arts and sciences: whether in the Genome Damage and Stability Centre in Life Sciences; the Migration Research Centre in the Social Sciences; the Thermo-Fluid Mechanics Research Centre, within Science and Technology or the Centre for Intellectual History in the Humanities; from the Sussex Energy Group in SPRU to work in international education in the Sussex Institute. The University's interdisciplinary traditions enhance our excellent institutional pedigree.
The University is also home to the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), one of the world's leading organisations for research, teaching and communication on international development. While IDS is independent of the University, it has strong links with faculty across the range of its research activities. Similarly the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, a partnership between the Universities of Sussex and Brighton and the NHS, provides exciting and fruitful opportunities for cross-disciplinary research.
Much of the research at Sussex is involved in finding new technologies, and the University is committed to building strong links with business in order to foster commercial opportunities. The Sussex Innovation Centre offers business incubation and support facilities, while Sussex IP is tasked with ensuring our recognition as a major knowledge-transfer centre. This work is underpinned by the Regional Development Office, whose mission is to act as a bridge between business, research and the University.
